This site is free to read and costs money to run. This page explains, in plain terms, where the money comes from.

1. Display advertising

No advertising network is active on this site at present, and no ads are currently served. If that changes, ad units will be clearly labelled Advertisement so you can tell them apart from editorial content, and neither Debora Ann Verburgt nor any advertiser would choose which specific ad you see — that is decided by the network.

We do not accept advertising that would require us to change, soften or remove an opinion. We do not allow advertisers to review essays before publication.

2. Affiliate links

Some links to products or services may be affiliate links. If you click one and later sign up or buy something, we may receive a commission at no additional cost to you.

  • Affiliate links are disclosed on the page where they appear, near the link, before you click.
  • A commission never buys a positive opinion. If we criticise a product we have an affiliate relationship with, the criticism stays.
  • We are not a party to any transaction you enter into with a third party. Their terms, pricing and privacy practices are theirs, not ours.

If we ever publish a piece that was paid for or supplied by a third party, it will be clearly and prominently labelled as sponsored at the top of the page, before the content. Sponsored pieces are never presented as ordinary essays.

4. What isn't for sale
